Lab overview

The Optoelectronic Characterization (OEC) Laboratory supports cutting-edge research in devices, materials, photonics and solar cells by researchers and students. The OEC laboratory is well equipped with high end research equipment. All users must be trained on the use of the equipment by facility staff before being authorized access to the equipment.

  • All OEC lab users must be fully trained and authorized (certified) to use the equipment in the lab facilities. We offer training courses for all of the equipment. If you have to cancel your training, please do so at least 48 hours in advance.
  • Users must comply at any time to KU Health and Safety policies. No user will be allowed in the lab if they did not attend the EHS training for lab access.
  • The lab lab-in-charge must be notified immediately of any unsafe conditions or unauthorized activity is observed. All equipment damages must be reported promptly, with the date and time of the incident to the facility’s lab-in-charge manager.
  • The OEC Laboratory provides training support to the KU research community on a wide range of advanced optoelectronic and solar characterization instruments, in a safe and well-resourced laboratory that is available to meet the needs of the users.
  • The laboratory instructor will review the following safety rules and regulations with all users and will point out the location and operation of the fire extinguishers and other laboratory safety equipment available in the lab.

Safety Rules and Regulations:

  • Users must follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. Ask questions if you do not understand the instructions.
  • Only authorized and trained users can access the facility and use the instruments.
  • Users must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required. A lab coat and safety glasses are required. Do not wear open-toed shoes, sandals, shorts or shirts with dangling sleeves. Tie back long hair and avoid dangling jewelry.
  • All equipment must be booked through the KU Booking system.
  • Do not touch any equipment, supplies, or other materials in lab without permission from the Instructor.
  • Never eat, drink, chew gum, or taste anything in the lab.
  • Never leave an experiment unattended.
  • Follow your Instructor’s instructions to dispose of any waste materials generated in an experiment.
  • Clean all work areas and equipment at the end of the experiment. Return all equipment clean and in working order to the proper storage area.
  • Dispose of waste properly and place other waste materials in the designed container(s).
  • Labels and equipment instructions must be read carefully and understood before the use of instruments. The equipment must be set up and used as directed by your custodian.
  • Users of the laboratory must be alert and proceed with caution at all times.
  • The lab instructor custodian must be notified immediately of any unsafe conditions observed.
  • All equipment damages must be reported promptly, with the date and time of incident to the facility’s lab manager.
  • Consumables such as gloves and kimwipes that are brought to the lab by individual users are to be removed at the end of their equipment usage session.
  • Users are only permitted to perform authorized and approved experiments. No unauthorized experiments may be performed.
  • Failure to adhere to these policies can result in the loss of instrument access.
