Lab overview

The Microbiology and Immunology Laboratory houses a wide range of advanced instrumentation for culturing, examination, identification of microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, yeasts, etc. More over Flow cytometry techniques for cell analyzing and sorting. The lab Supports life science, bacteriology, molecular genetics, medicine, and chemistry pillars to provide applied R&D and testing solutions.

The Microbiology and Immunology core Laboratory provides training support to the KU research community on a wide range of advanced instruments, in a safe and well-resourced laboratory that is available to meet the needs of the researchers.

The laboratory instructor will review the following safety rules and regulations with all users and will point out the location and operation of the fire extinguishers, safety shower, eye wash, and other laboratory safety equipment available in the lab.

Safety Rules and Regulations:

  • Users must follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. Ask questions if you do not understand the instructions.
  • Only authorized and trained users can access the facility and use the instruments.
  • Users must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required. A lab coat and safety glasses are required. Do not wear open-toed shoes, sandals, shorts or shirts with dangling sleeves. Tie back long hair and avoid dangling jewelry.
  • All equipment must be booked through the KU Booking system.
  • Do not touch any equipment, supplies, or other materials in lab without permission from the Instructor.
  • Never eat or drink in the lab.
  • Never leave an experiment unattended.
  • Follow the Instructor’s instructions to dispose of any waste materials generated in an experiment.
  • Clean all work areas and equipment at the end of the experiment. Return all equipment clean and in working order to the proper storage area.
  • Dispose of sharp waste properly and place other waste materials in the designed container(s).
  • Labels and equipment instructions must be read carefully and understood before the use of instruments. The equipment must be set up and used as directed by your instructor.
  • Users of the laboratory must be alert and proceed with caution at all times.
  • The lab custodian must be notified immediately of any unsafe conditions observed.
  • All equipment damages must be reported promptly, with the date and time of incident to the facility’s lab manager.
  • Consumables such as gloves, columns, vials, needles, cuvettes, standards, slides, centrifuge tubes, kimwipes that are brought to the lab by individual users are to be removed at the end of their equipment usage session.

Trained and certified users can access equipment from 8:30am to 5pm, Monday till Thursday, and 8.30am to 12.30pm on Fridays.
