The Research Fabrication and Prototyping Workshop is a one-stop solution provider, which contains a Training Centre, Design Centre, Wood shop, Machine shop, Welding shop, and Fabrication shop. Machining work is conducted from hand sketch to computer design to product output to final inspection, with integrity and continuously adapting to our users’ growing needs. The Research Fabrication and Prototyping Workshop provides design consultation, as well as precision machining on all types of prototyping and custom-designed parts. The Machine shop provides full services, from procuring materials to fabricating.

The Research Fabrication and Prototyping Workshop can do machining in a broad range of materials, such as polymer, carbon-steel, stainless steel, brass, copper, titanium, as well as other materials depending on the requirements of the design specifications. 

 

  • Users are not permitted to work without a Technician / Supervisor in the Research Fabrication and Prototyping Workshop.  An approved Research Fabrication and Prototyping Workshop employee must be present at all times.
  • Users are not allowed to work in the machine shop during weekends and after office hours. 
  • All who enter the Workshop must sign-in at the office.
  • When working in the shop two people must be present at all times. 
  • Safety glasses must be worn at all times. Tinted or sun- glasses are not to be used in the Workshop.
  • No sandals or open-toe shoes. Work boots or street shoes only.
  • Do not wear loose clothed or jewelry. Tie back long hair. 
  • Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) must be supplied for all materials not listed in the Workshop MSDS inventory before work can begin.
  • Dispose of waste according to the MSDS sheets and posted signs.
  • No part washing in the sinks.  Sinks are for hand washing only.
  • Do not lay rags on lathe or mill.
  • All metal scraps and cuttings are to be disposed of in the proper recycling drum. Do not put trash or metals of unknown composition into the recycling drum, separate plastics.
  • Do not throw anything away unless you are certain it is unusable. If in doubt, ask the Supervisor
  • Do not enter material storage area without permission.
  • Accidents and/or machine problems must be reported immediately to the Supervisor. The Research Laboratories Director will be notified when failure to report a problem promptly or false statement is provided.
  • All users must complete applicable training courses to be allowed to operate any machine tool. 

Untrained users will be limited, as determined by the Shop Supervisor.

  • Users should not use a cell phone while operating equipment.
  • The Supervisor must check all machine setups before machine operation begins.
  • Do not use compressed air for cleaning.  Refer to cleaning guide in the Workshop manual.
  • No horseplay in the Workshop.
  • No Eating or Drinking in the Workshop.
  • All tools must be signed out (this includes cutting tools) for use outside of the Workshop area. You must obtain the Workshop Supervisor’s approval before leaving the shop with a tool.  All tools must be returned and documented.
  • Users who do not return tools will be subject to access rights being forfeited.
  • A work order is required to build parts at the machine shop.

Trained and certified users can access equipment, from 8am to 4:30pm, Monday to Thursday, 8am to 12.30pm on Fridays.
