Lab overview

The Additive Manufacturing (AM) Lab is a part of the Core Research Laboratories at Khalifa University (KU). It houses state-of-the-art Additive Manufacturing machines and post-processing equipment. The Additive Manufacturing Lab is a global disruptive technology transforming many industries due to increased creativity in the product design process, easier production, reduced cost and expedited on-demand manufacturing, as well as reduced waste and improved sustainability.

The AM lab manufactures high-quality components conducted with several research centers at KU such as Advanced Digital and Additive Manufacturing (ADAM), and Aerospace Research Innovation Centre (ARIC). The aim of the lab is to additively manufacture high-quality components for both internal and external research, conducted with industry partners to manufacture high-quality/complex structures.

  • Users must follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. Ask questions if you do not understand the instructions.
  • Only authorized and trained users can access the facility and use the instruments.
  • Users must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required. A lab coat and safety glasses are required. Do not wear open-toed shoes, sandals, shorts or shirts with dangling sleeves. Tie back long hair and avoid dangling jewelry.
  • All equipment must be booked through the KU Booking system.
  • Do not touch any equipment, supplies, or other materials in lab without permission from the Instructor.
  • Never eat, drink, chew gum, or taste anything in the lab.
  • Follow your Instructor’s instructions to dispose of any waste materials generated in an experiment.
  • Clean all work areas and equipment at the end of the experiment. Return all equipment clean and in working order to the proper storage area.
  • Dispose of sharp waste properly and place other waste materials in the designed container(s).
  • Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) of different metal powder must be read.
  • A hardcopy of the MSDS file must be available in the lab for all chemicals that are used in the lab. The MSDS files for all chemicals you are planning to use in AM Lab should be sent to the lab team in advance of their use in the lab.
  • Users of the laboratory must be alert and proceed with caution at all times.
  • The lab custodian must be notified immediately of any unsafe conditions observed.
  • All equipment damages must be reported promptly, with the date and time of incident to the facility’s lab manager.
  • Users are only permitted to perform authorized and approved experiments. No unauthorized experiments may be performed.
  • Lab users are solely responsible for experimental data. The Research Laboratories Department accepts no responsibility for data collected or stored on laboratory systems.
